Man’s best friend. Is there any other animal in the world better suited for human companionship? There are some contenders, but dogs rule the pet world because they have so many great qualities. However, not all dogs are created equal. Centuries of selective breeding have created not only an incredible variety of shapes and sizes, but also a great diversity of temperaments and behaviours. Some of these behaviours are suited for specific situations, but not for being a family pet.

Difficult breeds: A good way to begin the process of choosing a dog is to learn which dog breeds are considered difficult. Here are some of the dog varieties that are considered complicated: Bulldog, Husky, Pit Bull, Beagle, Rottweiler, Sharpei, Akita, Chow Chow, Bull Mastiff, and the Jack Russell Terrier. With the right trainer, any of these breeds can make wonderful pets. But some breeds require more effort and should be left to people that already have experience.

Know your situation: From small apartments in the city, to sprawling farms in the country. The ages and the number of our children, as well as our personalities need to be considered when choosing a family pet. Big dogs can be too strong for children. High activity dogs get stressed in small spaces. Social dogs can get depressed if left alone. Choose a breed with a personality that fits your life.

What’s your plan? Dogs are more than just pets; they can be a contributing member of the family. The happiest dogs are the dogs with jobs. When a dog understands its role in your life, it releases the stress of not knowing what to do. Working dogs are generally very intelligent, and they can provide an extra level of enjoyment through their close involvement in your life. Guard dogs, for example, are highly trained and have sophisticated knowledge of human behaviour. If they are well trained, they are safer for your family, and they provide a level of protection as well. Guard dog training in Sydney, is offered at the Sydney Dog Training Centre, who have an impeccable reputation for animal care.

Dogs are the best. There I said it, dog lovers know it’s true. But dogs only achieve their potential in the hands of a caring owner. A family pet can be a defining element to your home and a point of common connection. Even in the rough times, everyone still loves the dog.  But your care and attention are required before and after you make the decision to bring a pooch into your home. Make sure to do your research and make a well-considered choice.
